A friend had told me the other day that he had seen one of my pieces on a porn site, but he didn't remember which one.

Well, I found it today. The problem is without paying a membership to the site I can't figure out a way to contact them to remove the piece. And it looks like this all happened early in 2015.

The piece in question is 'A Lovely View'. It is NSFW.

So, now I'm going through and putting the dreaded watermark on my work, especially the nudes (sigh). But I'm not sure how to go about getting my work taken off of the porn site, and using the google image match feature I'm going hunting to see if any others have been stolen and posted without my permission.

If anyone has any helpful suggestions I'd appreciate hearing them.

Thanks.

I loathe watermarks. I don't believe in 'intellectual property', I believe it is a political contruction that has no basis in objective reality. Originally, 'copyright' was a privilege granted by the king to a publisher to reproduce something - it had no bearing on compensation to the creator, just that the information posed no political damage.

If you put something on the internet, it can be saved or shared by others. And, there is nothing you or deviantart can do about it. If the work or idea is so valuable to you, don't put it on the internet.

One fellow anarchist suggested creates work that have an unmistakeable style, so even if people take it, people will know it is hers. For me, Douglas Simonson douglassimonson.com/ would be such an artist. I know his art and photography anywhere.

I limit most of my images to about 1200 x 1200 that I post online. But, I do give the models larger images (about print size) and tell them they can use them anyway they wish.

Maybe you can turn it into a positive, you can tell people that you were published on whatever site. Or, contact them with a sales pitch, 'I noticed you used one of my images, I can sell you more like it.'

At any rate, please don't use watermarks. Text along the edges look fine, but watermarks are ugly.

I agree that watermarks are ugly. And at this point is closing the barn door after the horses are gone. But, it is the fastest way to in some small way keep it from happening in future. I also understand that anything that gets posted anywhere on the net somehow in people's minds becomes fair game.

The thing that bothers me is that the image was posted to a porn site, and many think its me (I'll take the complement, I should look so good! LOL). And so far I haven't found a way to contact them to let them know that one it isn't me, and two I never gave my permission for that photo to ever be used by them or anyone else.

Your comment about text along the edges reminds me of an artist I met years ago. This fella designs book covers for sci-fi books. He figured out very early that if he signed the work along the edge like a 'traditional' artist does that it would get cropped out in the final copy. So, he started to get creative and finding ways to work is signature into the interior of the piece. Like a name on a clip board, or part of some carvings on a ornate stone wall, etc. That way his work was signed, and it couldn't be cropped out.

I've noticed tbat as well. I mean, one of the dA members was on here deleted his account and was in a porn site about older men. Idk anything else, but from what you said, it's like people like to share so many things for all over the world. Hehe. I hope from I told you, helps a little

Thanks, but I really don't want to delete my DA account.  Wish I there was a way for me to contact the porn site and let them know. But so far contacting anyone is pretty protected, and I don't want to join it just to get a hold of them.

Couldn't agree more. dA should at least figure out how to protect us.

About all we can do is watermark, and disable the free download.
